Volunteer Opportunies

St. Luke's wants you! We have numerous opportunities for you to become involved with the church. Teach a class, lead a Sunday School, work in the front office, organize an event, serve meals, build picture frames -- the opportunities are limitless. Radical Hospitality


Podcast

We would like to put our sermons on the Web site. This person would be responsible for using the sermon CD to create an audio file and then posting it to the Website. Time estimate is one hour each Sunday. Staff resource person is Melanie Nicholas.

 

Youth Webpage

We want to use our new Web site to its fullest extent, and that includes making our Youth a great “virtual” home!  This person would update content, maintain the online Youth calendar and post pictures. Estimated time would be four hours per month.  Staff resource person is Melanie Nicholas.

 

Sanctuary Greeters/Welcome Desk Greeters

Are you friendly and do you enjoy helping others? The Connections Ministry wants you! Greeters welcome guests at the Sanctuary doors on Sundays for 10 minutes at the beginning of a service. Welcome Desk Greeters can choose to work during early service, Sunday school or late service once a month.  Staff resource person is Melanie Nicholas.

 

Front Desk Volunteers (weekday)

Put your friendly face, voice and fingers to work at the St. Luke’s office. We need weekday volunteers to answer the phones and help with simple clerical tasks such as filing and note-writing. Volunteer shifts available to suit your time availability and week day availability. Serve two hours or four per week. We need you!  Staff resource person is Martha von Cotzhausen.

 

Bulletin Boards

We use our church bulletin boards to highlight church events and people, as well as special ministries and projects.  If you like to be creative in a big way, we have bulletin boards waiting for you!  Four hours per month.  Staff resource person is Melanie Nicholas.

 

Photography

Attention shutterbugs!  We have some amazing talent in our congregation.  Ray, Rod, Kent and Alison have taken amazing pictures to share with us, but could use some help.  If you are willing to help photograph special events such as groundbreakings, choir performances, breakfasts and more, please let Melanie Nicholas know.  Times vary.  Photographers will be asked to submit their photos on CD or via e-mail.  Staff resource person is Melanie Nicholas.

 

Technology Team

Help St. Luke’s determine our technology needs. Assess our current computers and infrastructure and help determine our priorities and future needs. Estimated time would be four hours per month for each team member. Staff resource person is Melanie Nicholas.

 

Neighborhood Inviting Team

We are called to make disciples, and the need in our church neighborhood is great. This team will assemble invitations and then walk the neighborhood to invite residents to special events at St. Luke’s, including Easter, Christmas, Rally Day, etc. Estimated time is three hours per event. Staff resource person is Melanie Nicholas.

 

Sugar Bakers

Show us your sweet side! One of the biggest strengths of our congregation is making guests feel truly welcome. We need bakers to help make cookies and treats for special events including Christmas Eve (35 dozen cookies were shared this Christmas Eve!)  and other special events. Time varies depending upon the need. Staff resource person is Melanie Nicholas.

 

Foyer Display Case

Use your decorating and organization skills to transform our foyer display case. Time estimate is two hours per month. Staff resource person is Melanie Nicholas.

 

Cleaning

Our church home is just like our personal homes. We want them to be clean and beautiful.  Our wonderful custodians have full plates and could use some help polishing the paneling and pews, cleaning the Sanctuary foyer globes, and more.  If you would like to volunteer for this special ministry, let us know. Times slots and clean-up dates will depend on the size of the group.  Staff resource person is Freida Dixon.

 

Odd Jobs

Occasionally the church needs something painted, repaired or put together.  If you have some time to spare and a skill to offer, please let us know.  These small tasks make a big difference in maintaining the building and making it a safe, welcoming place for members and visitors.  Other needs include assistance with trash pick-up on Saturdays to prepare the grounds for Sunday.  Staff resource person is Freida Dixon.

 

Risk Taking Mission and Service


Lamar Mentors

“Reading buddies” are needed to help 2nd grade children with reading and to establish a friendship.  Time required can vary from 1 to 2 hours per week.  The school also wants helpers for special events, such as parties.  Kathy Horton is our coordinator.  Staff resource person is Larry Bailey.

 

Homebound Communion

For members who cannot attend worship, we extend (reach out) the table of the Lord.  Servers take the elements immediately after worship or after lunch, Sunday.  Nancy Rankin is the coordinator, as one of the Special Cares ministries.  Servers rotate, so that each one goes about 5 to 8 times in a year.  Staff resource person is Larry Bailey.

Area Mission Outreach Services

All-Church food drives in July and November.   The Outreach Council asks people to donate non-perishable food as well as gently used clothing.  Help needed periodically to take these items to the AMOS house at 908 S. Loraine.  Assistance also needed to help stack food in shelves, Monday – Friday, 9:00a.m. – 12:00p.m.  AMOS Director is Maria at 687-2667.  Our representatives are Evie McKown and Bob Altany.  Staff resource person is Larry Bailey.

 

VIM Trips 

The Outreach Council is actively collecting information about a mission trip to either Galveston, TX or New Orleans, LA to help clean up after recent hurricanes.  We would be away for about 9 to 14 days.  We also will send a team to McCurdy School for one week in Espanola, NM in July.  For 2011, we will pursue a 16-day work team trip to Kenya, where Bill & Jerri Savuto serve.  Persons should be capable of outside labor for any of these mission trips.  We will pay our travel, housing, and meals.  Staff resource person is Larry Bailey.

Soup Kitchen

In southeast Midland, needs people to serve meals at noon, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.  Time required is about 1½ hours.  We will obligate ourselves for one month as a trial period..  Contact Stacy Pickett.  Staff resource person is Larry Bailey.

 

Christmas in April

This city-wide ministry weatherizes, repairs and paints the homes of those unable to afford or accomplish those tasks on their own.  Workers are needed as well as persons to provide meals.  Josef Pickett is our House Captain and Larry Bailey is the staff resource person.

 

Pumpkin Patch

Each October help is needed for reading to young children in morning hours and to manage the sale of pumpkins and craft items throughout the day--2-hour time slots.  Help is also needed to write cards and make phone calls to remind people of their times to read or manage the sales.

Unload pumpkins when they arrive (lots of good exercise) or help with advertizing--TV interviews, make/prepare signs to be posted around the city and St. Luke's property.  Staff resource person is Larry Bailey.

               

Habitat for Humanity 

This organization has built dozens of houses in Midland.  Help St. Luke’s participate in building one in the fall.  Michele Seymour, a member of Outreach council, works for Habitat.  The project will take a number of weeks and work is done under qualified supervision. Staff resource person is Larry Bailey.

               

Coat Drive

As cold weather approaches each year we work, we purchase new coats in consultation about need with Lamar teachers.  Staff resource person is Larry Bailey.

 

Tree of Warmth

During the Christmas season, mittens, scarves, and gloves are collected

in the foyer.  Volunteers are needed to find wagons to hold the items, and at the end of the Christmas season, to collect the mittens, scarves, and gloves and take them to AMOS.  This is one way we can spread the warmth of St. Luke’s to those who are without.  Staff resource person is Janis King.

 

Meals on Wheels

Deliver meals to homebound citizens.  St. Luke’s concentrates our volunteers in May, Monday-Friday, 10:30a.m.-12:00 p.m.  Leah Gerhard, our coordinator, will have a sign-up sheet in April.  Senior Services of Midland needs drivers all year, and anyone can offer to do so by calling 689-6693.  Staff resource person is Larry Bailey.

 

Flower Ministry

Each Sunday there are flowers in the sanctuary and often they are left to be delivered.  If you like to see someone’s face light up, then this is the opportunity for you to extend the care of the congregation and receive the immediate benefit of that care.  Staff resource person is Larry Bailey.

 

Recycling

Volunteer to take bulletins and other recyclable paper to local bins.  Staff resource person is Larry Bailey.

Safe Place

This residential facility in Midland is for women who have moved out of an unsafe home environment and who are not yet able to support themselves.  We regularly donate personal care items.  A list is posted on the wall just inside the Kansas St. entrance.  Pauline Gwyn delivers them.  We promote this giving ministry in May; however, items are welcome all through the year.  Staff resource person is Larry Bailey.

 

Passionate Worship

 

Cantor

A cantor sings the psalm with the congregation, setting out the refrain to be learned and leading the congregation in response.  A good sense of melody and intonation are required but one need not have a “solo quality” voice, as the text is the important thing.  Requires 1 hour for the week’s music and usually attendance at both services on a Sunday.  Staff resource person is Catherine Bartoli.

 

Robe Tender

Choir and acolyte robes need care during the year and can be machine washed.  Tenders would take the robes home two or three times a year, or as needed, to wash and mend them.  Staff resource person is Catherine Bartoli.

 

Altar Guild

This group will take responsibility for caring for the paraments (cloths that hang on pulpit, lectern, and from balcony) by changing them for the appropriate season and arranging for cleaning as necessary.  Also change out the stoles for the choirs.  Requires a half hour approximately every other week, or as seasons change. Staff resource person is Catherine Bartoli.

 

SDG Kids Rehearsal Pianist

A pianist is needed to accompany the SDG Kids rehearsals on Wednesdays from 4:00-4:45 p.m. and when they sing in worship.  Ability to play is required.  Music is generally not difficult.  Staff resource person is Catherine Bartoli.

 

Substitute Pianist/Organist

We occasionally need substitutes to play for rehearsals or for sectional rehearsals or worship.  Wednesdays, Chapel Choir, 6:15-7:15 pm and Chancel Choir 7:30-9:00 p.m.  Staff resource person is Catherine Bartoli.

 

SDG Kids Assistants

Adults (and youth) are needed occasionally for particular units.  For example, with the guitar unit, a few will help students individually during group instruction.  Wednesdays from 4:00-4:45 or 4:45-5:30, depending on units. 

 

Choir Librarians

Keep choir folders current by pulling completed anthems and inserting new music.  Occasionally photocopy music for worship.  Requires ½ hour to 1 hour weekly, usually Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday.  Staff resource person is Catherine Bartoli.


Special Projects

Projects might include entering texts of anthems into the music library program; organizing music in choir room (large works); arranging chancel area for concert; painting risers; etc.  Time required will vary according to project.  Staff resource person is Catherine Bartoli.

 

Small Ensembles

Opportunities to prepare choral and instrumental music in smaller ensembles.  This can be either on an occasional basis (rehearse for four weeks and sing/play in church), or on a regular basis (with a weekly established rehearsal, singing/playing in worship on a set schedule).  Staff resource person is Catherine Bartoli.

 

Soloists

Prepare vocal or instrumental solos to sing/play in worship. Staff resource person is Catherine Bartoli.

 

Sound

Sound technicians operate the sound board during Sunday morning worship services.  No previous experience is required and the time commitment will be for one or two Sunday mornings each month.  Staff resource person is Rachel Burton.

 

Ushers

Ushers are responsible for greeting people as they come into the church building for Sunday services, collecting the offering, and making sure that the Sanctuary is prepared for worship.  Ushers are scheduled on a monthly rotation and typically spend 1-2 hours each time they are scheduled to serve.  Staff resource person is Rachel Burton.

 

Communion Stewards

The elements for Holy Communion, bread and juice, are prepared once a month for worship services by a communion steward.  This person is asked to set the elements out before both morning services and make sure that either the chalice or small cups are filled.  The communion steward is also responsible for tending to the communion table while the Eucharist is being served to see that cups are refilled and bread replaced as needed.  Total time commitment is 2-3 hours.  Staff Resource Person is Rachel Burton.

 

Communion Servers

Those who serve communion during Sunday worship services are responsible for bringing the communion elements to the communion table at the appointed time during the worship service, and then assisting the pastors in serving communion to the congregation.  This may include holding a chalice for dipping or a tray of small cups.  Time commitment is less than one hour.  Staff resource person is Rachel Burton.

 

Pewback Ministry

Each month a different person is assigned to maintain, clean and organize the pewbacks in the Sanctuary.  This only requires one hour two or three times a month, and includes making sure that each pewback has a full supply of offering envelopes, prayer request cards and pens.  We ask that you pray for those who will be worshiping as you do this ministry.  Staff resource person is Rachel Burton.

 

 

Intentional Faith Development

 

Toddlers and Preschool Sunday School

Each week we have a short lesson for our youngest children.  We need people interested in telling Bible stories, singing, and playing games from 10:00 to 10:30 each Sunday.  The work is fun and the rewards are great!  Contact Lesley Jeffcoat (Toddler and Preschool Sunday School Coordinator) at 684-6224.  Staff resource person is Janis King.

 

Rotation Sunday School

Each Sunday morning from 9:30-10:30, songs, art, cooking, science, storytelling, and occasionally video classes are taught to our kids in Kindergarten through sixth grade.  Complete lesson plans are available for each teacher. Staff resource person is Janis King.

 

FaithWeaver Friends

This activity oriented class for kids K-6 meets each Wednesday evening from 6:15-7:15 for

 lessons, projects, and snacks while their parents are attending Body and Soul classes.  Complete lesson plans are available for each teacher.  Staff resource person is Janis King.

 

St. Luke’s Youth

Needed…..adults who love working with teens each Sunday evening 5:00-7:00 p.m., and who are willing and eager to give up some free time to play games, travel, do mission work, laugh and have a great time!  Staff resource person is Janis King. 

 

Youth Sunday School

If you enjoy lively discussion and want to share God's word with teens, Youth Sunday school can use you!  We meet from 9:30-10:30 each Sunday morning.  Staff resource person is Janis King.

 

Lunch Bunch

During the school year, volunteers are needed to serve lunch to the high school students each Wednesday from 11:15 to 12:30.  It’s a fun way to meet and interact with our youth and their friends.  Staff resource person is Janis King.

 

Adult Sunday School Substitutes

Love to teach but don’t want an every Sunday commitment?  We need a pool of substitute teachers for our adult classes as well as facilitators for short-term studies.  Staff resource person is Kathryn Boren.

 

Wednesday Servers

September through April, food servers are needed from 5:00-6:00 p.m., each Wednesday evening during the meal.  It’s a great way to get to greet people each week.  Staff resource person is Janis King.
