The Lay Shepherd Ministry

What Does a Lay Shepherd Do?

Each Lay Shepherd has a flock consisting of approximately five families. Lay Shepherds set the "pace" in caring ministry for our church family through
Prayer, Availability, Contact and Encouragement:

P
RAYER
"...Pray for each other. The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power..."
James 5:16

AVAILABILITY
"Share each other's troubles and problems and so they obey our Lord's command."
Galatians 6:2

CONTACT
"...Return again and visit to see how (they are) getting along."
Acts 15:36

ENCOURAGEMENT
"So encourage each other to build each other up..."
I Thessalonians 5:11

Why The Need For Lay Shepherds?

At St. Luke's, we want to maintain a warm and caring atmosphere and relate to each other on a one-to-one basis. To do this, Lay Shepherds are trained ("equipped") to complement the clergy and staff's pastoring care. This is one of many methods by which we at St. Luke's may fulfill our Mission Statement, "Growing in Christ, Making a Difference."

Who Are The Lay Shepherds?

Many people of St. Luke's United Methodist Church are qualified for the Lay Shepherd ministry simply through their personal qualities such as::

  • being a good listener
  • expressing feelings of warmth and understanding
  • doing simple acts of kindness and thoughtfulness
  • willing to take training to enhance their innate spiritual gifts

Who Are the Flock Members?

It is our hope that one day we will have a sufficient number of trained Lay Shepherds for all of us at St. Luke's to be members of a Lay Shepherd's flock. St. Luke's members interested in becoming a member of a Lay Shepherd's flock may contact Rev. Larry Bailey or Rev. Richard Edwards at 694-2571.
