Outreach

"Faith, by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead. Show me your faith without deeds, and I will show you my faith by what I do" -James 2:17-18

The Outreach Council promotes ministries outside the building, serving people in Midland and in other parts of the world. To find out more or to volunteer, contact Kelly Inman at 694-2571.

Ministries include:

1. A.M.O.S. Two food drives for AMOS, an agency composed of about 10 congregations, located across the street from South Elementary School. Several of St. Luke's members work there to sort and distribute food every week.

2. Dream Catchers, a ministry at Lamar Elementary School, composed of 5 congregations in this part of the city. We read and tutor children in the 2nd grade, help with parties and sponsor a winter coat drive.

3. Blood Drives. We will host two blood drives in 2011 in cooperation with the Permian Basin Blood Bank, one in the spring and one in the fall.

4. Christmas in Action, a city-wide project to weatherize houses of people who are elderly, low income, and unable to do the maintenance. We do this in April, usually new siding, painting, and window installation.

5. Volunteer In Missions. Most years, we spend a week at McCurdy School in Espanola, NM. We do light maintenance work and yard work. McCurdy is a private United Methodist School. It offers a safe campus with rather high academic achievement among students (safe from drugs/alcohol) in an area of high drug abuse.

St. Luke's has scheduled another mission trip to Kenya starting August 15, 2012 and returning on September 1, 2012. Please see Kelly Inman or Marion Daily for more information . Our work will be similar to that done in 2007, building small houses for children orphaned due to AIDS and other structures around the hospital compound in Maua.

6. Meals on Wheels. In May, we deliver meals to homebound, elderly people, to relieve the regular people who deliver. Most of us drive once during the month; some drive once each week. Some of our members deliver meals all through the year.

7. Pumpkin Patch. Elementary and kindergarten school classes come for story times, and people from all around Midland visit the Patch in October. Our purpose is to express God's care and concern for people who have various needs. We do this as a normal response to Jesus' command (and the command to the Hebrew people of old) to love our neighbors as ourselves.

8. Habitat for Humanity. Beginning in 2010, St. Luke's has partnered with other Midland churches in the Apostles Build. We hold a fundraiser and work days to help complete the project to stamp out homelessness and poverty in Midland.

9. KenyaDoIt! This amazing ministry helps build housing for AIDS orphans in Kenya. Dates for the trip are Aug. 16-Sept. 3. Contacts for this trip are Kelly Inman and Marion Daily. Find out more here.
